Advertising, Google, and Privacy

We use Google (Google AdSense) to display advertisements in this Section and, we hope, to receive some money for renting out that advertising space. That fact has some privacy implications.

The following privacy policy text is based on suggested text copied from the Google website (at https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=100557&sourceid=aso, on 2010 February 16th) for use by publishers whose websites use Google to show advertisements.

“We use third-party advertising companies [specifically, Google and Google AdSense] to serve ads when you visit our website. These companies may use information (not including your name, address, email address, or telephone number) about your visits to this and other websites in order to provide advertisements about goods and services of interest to you. Google also says:

What should I put in my privacy policy about the DoubleClick DART cookie?

Your posted privacy policy should include the following information about Google and the DoubleClick DART cookie:

  • Google, as a third party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on your site.
  • Google’s use of the DART cookie enables it and its partners to serve ads to your users based on their visit to your sites and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • Users may opt out of the use of the DART cookie by visiting the Google ad and content network privacy policy.”

The above text might not be fully clear about the likelihood that “the DART cookie” permits Google to keep track of your interests and browsing over time as you look at multiple websites, if you do not opt out of “the DART cookie.”
